The internet is infinite wealth and unlimited opportunity. If you are willing to invest the time to learn a few new skills, you can earn as much money as you want. How to Earn Money Online Without an Investment.

Throughout this article, as I show you how to earn money online, I will first show you the free method to complete a step, and when appropriate, I will show you a paid option too.

In any business endeavor, there is a balance between spending time and spending money. If you have more time than you have money, put in the time. If you can afford it, spend the money to save time and frustration, and to expedite your journey to online success.

First, I’ll discuss the usual places people go to earn money online without an investment and why I don’t recommend them.

The Usual Suspects: Surveys, Micro-tasks, and Freelancing.

It seems to me that when people first search for a way to make money online without spending money, they are drawn to survey sites. Surveys are a waste of time. Most surveys are scams and the ones that aren’t scams pay very little. You’d be lucky to earn $10 a month with surveys. Go here to read my article on survey scams.Opens in a new tab.

Micro-tasks pay mere pennies and the work is mind-numbing. If you try it, I think you will soon tell yourself there must be a better way to make money online. Fortunately, there is.

It is possible to make reasonable money with freelance sites, but not at first. At first, a beginning freelancer will get the jobs no one else wants and will typically get the clients no one else wants too. These are the clients who demand high-quality work but pay very little. In other words, they expect you to sweat blood for them but will only pay you chump change. That’s hell.

How to Earn Money Online Without an Investment

If you stick with the freelance sites, do good work, and cultivate relationships with the better-paying clients, you can eventually make a decent income.

The biggest reason I don’t recommend freelance sites is that in the time it takes to get established, you could have built your own online business that pays much more and is a lot less stressful. Also, as a freelancer, you will always be trading your time for money. Your income will be limited to how fast you can work. You’ll be on the freelancer hamster wheel of death until you burn out or quit.

There’s a better way to make money online with unlimited earning potential. All it asks of you is to learn a few new skills, apply these skills and to stick with it through thick and thin. In return, you’ll have the ability to tap into the unlimited wealth of the internet at will, earn as much money as you want and work from any place with an internet connection.

Start Your Own Online Business.

In order to earn a full-time income and more online, you will need to think like an entrepreneur. Until you think like an entrepreneur, you will be vulnerable to the many traps, scams, and distractions on the internet.

Forget about trading your time for money. Instead, focus on creating a business that offers value. A business is valuable when it helps solve people’s problems, helps them reach a goal or fulfills a desire.

The Not-So-Secret Secret Formula.

The secret formula for making money online really isn’t secret at all. It’s just so plain simple people overlook it. Burn this formula into the deepest recesses of your brain. Tattoo it on your forehead. This formula will guide you to internet success. Remember it always.

Here’s the formula:

Build a website, attract visitors, get paid.

Website + Visitors = $

You might think there’s got to be more to it than this. Yes, there is, but for the moment, let’s stick to fundamentals.

How to Earn Money Online Without an Investment.
The Dangers of this Method.

This method works and you can do it without an investment or a guru.

However, it takes some time to see results. It takes time for the search engines to find your website and rank the content. And it takes time for the search engines to trust your website. How much time? Who knows? The search engines move in mysterious ways.

Here’s the danger. While you’re waiting for the search engines to rank your site, gurus across the internet are flashing cash, mansions, and sports cars under your nose trying to lure you to their $5,000 scam training courses promising fast easy money.

Ignore the hype. Stick with this method. Slow and steady wins the race.

Where to Begin.

Building a website is so easy, I’ll skip it for now and discuss how to get visitors. Before we’re done here, I’ll give you a link to a free website and show you how to build it in a few clicks of a mouse.

Getting paid is easy too, once you have visitors. On the other hand, attracting visitors to your website takes skill or money or both, so let’s discuss that next.

How to Get Visitors to Your Website.

Basically, there are two ways to get people to come to your website. The search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo direct people to your website or, you pay for ads and the ads direct people to your website.

Ads are expensive and not suitable for beginners. You’ll quickly go broke buying ads if you don’t know what you’re doing. So, unless you can afford to lose several hundred dollars as you learn about ad campaigns, I strongly suggest you focus on free, organic traffic from the search engines.

First, we must understand the psychology of the search engines and how to give them what they want.

Search Engine Psychology.

Search engines

Search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo are logical beasts and want only one thing.

They want to give their user the best possible experience. If a user searched Google for a recipe for banana bread, they don’t want Google to show them a website about toe fungus.

In this case, Google wants the best possible content about banana bread. So, if you have a website with a good article about banana bread that solves the user’s banana bread problem, Google will bring this visitor to your site. If that visitor buys something through a link on your site, you make money.

Once your website is established, this cycle can repeat hundreds and thousands of times a day.

It’s as simple as that. No tricks. No gimmicks. No shortcuts.

Give the search engines what they want and the search engines will deliver visitors to your website.

How to Know What the Search Engines Want.

The search engines want what their users are searching for, information, usually specific information. But, how do you find out what people are searching for online? You use a keyword tool.

Not all keyword tools are created equal. Most are worthless. The one I recommend has a free and a paid option. Free is good, but the paid option is better and affordable. Start with the free option, then dial up to the paid option when you’re ready.

Jaxxy results with notes Border

My favorite keyword tool is Jaxxy. To the right is a picture of the Jaxxy Keyword tool.

Take a moment to read the notes printed in red.  When searching for a keyword, the objective is to find a keyword that a lot of people are searching for but does not have too many competing websites. This can be tricky, but Jaxxy helps you find these rare gems quickly, by marking them with a green dot.

Not every keyword or keyword phrase that has a green dot is usable, but they are the ones to look at. You can safely ignore keywords that have a yellow or red dot. Those will be too difficult to rank for.

With the keyword tool, we find out what people are searching for, then we write an article about it on our website. Because we know people are interested in the keyword, it will bring visitors to our website.

Every article we write for our website that is focused on a keyword is like a beacon shining across the internet guiding visitors to our website. It takes time for the search engines to find our articles and to trust our website. This is why it’s so important to be patient, trust the process and keep adding content to your website.

To try the Jaxxy keyword tool for free, simply type a keyword in the field below to get started.

Choosing a Niche.

Your website will need to be focused on a specific subject. Since you will be writing a lot of content for your website, it’s important that it’s about something you enjoy and that interests you. Otherwise, building your online business will feel like just another job. You don’t want that.

Focus by Dimitris Kalogeropoylos

The beauty of having an online business is that it allows you to live life on your terms. If you build it right, your website can be the ticket to personal and financial freedom. Don’t muck it up by building a website about something you don’t care about only because you think it will be profitable.

It’s helpful if you are also knowledgeable about the subject of your website, but if it’s something you’re interested in and you are willing to research it, that will work too.

A niche is a subject. Take organic gardening for example. A website about organic gardening will be filled with articles about various aspects of organic gardening, such as growing organic tomatoes, organic soil amendments, composting, worm composting, organic bug control, open-pollinated seeds, etc.

Whatever niche you are considering, brainstorm subjects you can write articles about relating to that niche. Then, check these subjects in the keyword tool to determine if people are searching for these subjects online.

If you want to make money with your website, you must have content on it that people are searching for.

Building a Free Website.

Building a free website is easy. All it takes is few clicks of your mouse.

Before we build a website, we need a name for it. Since your first or second choice for a website name might be taken, it’s a good idea to have at least three names picked out before we begin.

If the subject of your website is in the name, that’s helpful, but not essential. It could be something as simple as “GarysGarden,” or “GuitarLicks,” or “BakingWithSal.” Or, it could be generic like “LisasBlog,” or “SouthernCharm.” Shorter is better in a name.

Once you have a few names picked out for your website. Type your first choice in the field below to get started building your free website.

This free website comes with a free starter membership in the Wealthy Affiliate online community which includes additional training, support, another keyword tool and much more.

Take a moment to complete your account profile with a picture and a few sentences about who you are. Members in this community are very helpful and will reach out to help you once they see you’re a real person and not a robot.

When you create a free Wealthy Affiliate account, I’ll be in touch within the hour to tell you how to contact me directly for help. Take advantage of the free starter membership and explore the community. There is also a paid membership level.

If you choose not to upgrade to the paid membership level, your free website is still yours. However, if you’re serious about succeeding with an online business, the paid membership will make it much easier and dramatically boost your success.

Adding Content to Your Website.

The success of your website is dependent on the content. Every article you add to your website will draw visitors to your site.

The more articles you have on your website, the more traffic you will have and the more money you will make. However, you must provide value for your visitor. Give them something they can use. Be generous. The articles don’t have to be perfect, but they do need to be helpful.

Strive to write articles that are about 1,500 words long. If writing is a struggle for you, it’s okay to begin with shorter articles and add longer articles later when you are more confident. Also, as you gain experience, you can always go back and revise an earlier article.

Coffee Shop by Adam Norwood

Focus each article on a keyword or keyword phrase you have researched in the keyword tool. Use the keyword in the title of the article and once or twice in the body of the article. That’s enough. Google frowns on “keyword stuffing,” so don’t overdo it.

Write for the reader in a casual, friendly tone.

When I write for my website, I like to imagine I’m talking to my best friend over coffee. Any advice or recommendation I give is honest and sincere.

If a visitor to my site spends money because of something I wrote, I want them to be delighted with the purchase.

Making Money.

Once you have visitors coming to your website, monetizing it is easy. There are literally thousands of ways to make money with your website once you have traffic.

One of the more lucrative ways to monetize your website is to be an affiliate for products and services that will help your visitor solve a problem or fulfill a desire.

Going back to our gardening example, you might write an article about garden tillers and in the text of the article suggests a specific tiller and provide a link to where it can be purchased. Make this link an affiliate link and you will get a commission each time someone clicks it and buys a tiller.

You can also put ads and banners on your website although these are less effective. We have been so bombarded with ads that we are blind to them. I specifically avoid ads on my websites and instead focus the visitor’s attention on the content.

Recap – How to Earn Money Online Without an Investment.

We’ve covered a lot of ground here and I wasn’t able to go into as much detail as I would have liked without making this article ridiculously long. However, I’m available to answer your questions. After you create your free Wealthy Affiliate account, you can reach me directly through Wealthy Affiliate if you have a question, or you can ask a question below in the comment area.

Success with this method boils down to the not-so-secret, secret formula:

Build a website, attract visitors, get paid.

Website + Visitors = $

To do that, you must choose a niche that interests you, find out what people are searching for within that niche by using a keyword tool like Jaxxy, create a website around that niche, fill your website with keyword focused content your visitors can use and, ultimately, monetize your website so you can make money.

This approach works. It doesn’t cost a lot of money and it doesn’t require a guru. The trick is to give the search engines what they want. If you give the search engines what they want, all the power and goodness of Google, Bing, and Yahoo works for you!

  1. Gary,

I think you really get what you pay for, and the same goes for businesses. I guess you can make a few bucks by doing PPC and Pay per Surveys but it’s gonna be as much as a low wage worker.

I’m also building an online business as well and hosting my blog on SiteRubix. Wealthy Affiliate has helped make money online, it’s still along way to go until I can become financially independent but I’m on my way!

    Thanks for sharing!

    Cheers,
    Anh

    1. Hi, Anh Nguyen!

I think it is true you get what you pay for to a degree. Unfortunately, there are legions of scams online that cause to people to pay out the nose for nothing, so in that case, no, they did not get what they paid for. Still, I agree with your point.

Fortunately, it is possible to start and online business for nothing, thanks to Wealthy Affiliate. And, it is possible to make money with the free websites Wealthy Affiliate includes with their free starter membership. However, and this gets back to your point, it’s a lot easier and productive to invest a little money into your business to get the most out of it.

      All the best,

      Gary

  2. Thanks for writing this article. You’ve really laid out the best way to make money online. It’s what I’ve used to be successful for over a decade. So I know it works. I like the tools you recommend as well. Jaaxy is something I use every week and it hasn’t steered me wrong. Great job!

  3. You really explained well how anybody can earn money online without an investment.

I also use Jaaxy for my keyword research and love it. I didn’t know there was a free version, apart from the 30 initial searches that they give you. Those got used up for me so quickly that I ended up upgrading because it was just so easy to use.

Do you have any idea if the free version has changed or not?

    1. Hi, Michel!

Thanks for stopping by. The free version of Jaaxy is the same at the 30 free initial searches. I agree, Jaaxy is so much fun it’s easy to run through 30 searches, but the Pro version is very affordable.

      All the best,

      Gary

  4. The title caught me and I just kept reading. A really great article with some awesome advice.

The search engine conundrum is a tricky one. You say that if you keep going you will succeed and the search engines will begin to rank your site.

Seems like a little pot of gold at the end of a rainbow scenario?

I guess the search engines can not give too much away as a definitive criteria of what they like and don’t like will make it too easy to work around?

    1. Hi, Fairweather Green!

      Thanks for stopping by.

It is fruitless to try and second guess the search engines. Their logic is very broad and infinitely fuzzy.

Yes, the search engines are mysterious beasts, but it doesn’t really matter what their criteria is beyond knowing they want to provide the best experience possible for the user. As a website owner, that’s what you want to do too.

Also, keep in mind that the search engines analyze ALL of the words in the written content of a website. It is highly probably that an article will get ranked for many keywords beyond the targeted keyword.

A winning strategy to profit from an authority website is to create helpful content and lots of it.

      All the best,

      Gary

  5. You really laid it all out on the line of how to do this online business. You’re absolutely right when you mention to keep at what you’re doing and get traffic to your site and in turn the revenue will come in. It is hard to ignore the hype of get rich schemes when you are new to the online business world. Having your own website does take time and work. It is rewarding though when you get that first sale! Got to just stay at it and keep up with consistent content! Great post!

    1. Hi, Albert!

      Thanks for stopping by.

I know what you mean about all the hype from the get rich quick schemes. Part of me wishes it was true. Imagine, if there was a magic button that turned the internet into our private ATM we’d all be lounging at the pool, pressing our magic buttons and living large.

The truth is, making money online requires sustained effort. The beauty of this system is it works and it leverages all of the awesome power of the search engines. In time, the potential income is phenomenal.

      All the best,

      Gary

  6. That was a long and interesting article. I am happy I found it. You have some great ideas on how to earn money online without an investment. The part I like the best was how you outlined Jaaxy very well in it. I think many people forget to do proper research and believe that their site will rank well.
    Thanks again,
    Marc

    1. Hi, Marc!

      Thanks for stopping by.

Jaaxy is my secret weapon. I really think it’s my unfair advantage over my competition. And it’s so darn fast and easy to use I don’t get bogged down in keyword research.

Before I found Jaaxy, I tried several other tools and then wasted time and money building websites based on the lousy keywords I found with those inferior tools.

The thing most keyword tools will give you is the number of searches, but they often fail to show a realistic measure of your competition. That’s what will kill your chances of ever getting ranked.

      All the best,

      Gary

  7. So I’ve been working on my online website for a few months now and I’ve come across this article. And you are absolutely right – it’s so tempting that while waiting for the search engines to find you that you go off and try and find new ways to make money. I mean the process can be nerve wracking. I’ve spent so much time and I’m not seeing many results as yet. I use the Keyword tool at WA as opposed to Jaaxy – do you think that makes a big difference? Also how long would you wait to get visitors before you wrap it up and try a new niche? Like do you think there are some niches that are just not worth pursuing? Finally – sorry for all the questions, you’re post just got me thinking – how much content would you suggest writing lets say per week to see successful rankings?

    1. Hi, Martina!

      Thanks for stopping by.

The keyword tool in WA is excellent. Jaaxy is faster, so it makes creating content faster and easier. The Pro version of Jaaxy is just $19 a month and worth it in time savings alone. With Jaaxy, you can spend more time creating content and less time searching for keywords.

You asked how much longer I would wait before changing my niche. Any niche can be made profitable. However, some niches are easier to create content for, but depends on you and what you enjoy writing about. Without knowing your niche, I would strongly urge you NOT to change niches.

Keep the niche you have and find a way to get the results you are looking for.

In the beginning, don’t measure your success with how much you’re earning with your website. Instead, measure your success with how far you have gone through the training and the new skills you have learned. Once you have the skills down and understand how the search engines work, it is only a matter of time until you are earning as much as you want.

I’m sure you’ve heard that content is king. I like to think of content as the money engine of your website, because the more content you have on your website the more money you will make. Keep in mind the lag time between posting an article and seeing it ranked.

I know of a WA member who wrote an article and posted it to his site, but did not see it rank for 18 months! However, when it did finally rank, it was a money maker.

You asked how frequently you should post articles to you website. A general rule is at least once a week. Twice a week is better. Something magical happens when you have 50 or more posts on your website. The search engines begin to take your website seriously. When you have a 100 posts, more magic happens.

I encourage you to get as many posts on your website as quickly as possible while stile maintaining the highest quality of writing you can.

When you are ready, I encourage you to add video to your website too.

What you are learning in WA can realistically earn you $10,000 a month. This will give you incredible personal and financial freedom. However, it will take time to get to that point. The sooner you have 100 posts on your website, the closer you will be to making this kind of money.

      All the best,

      Gary

  8. Hi Gary,
I’ve heard about making money online and have even looked into programs that claim to teach you how to do just that, but they all cost money to join. In some cases quite a lot of money, which I can’t currently afford and I’m also afraid of getting taken to the cleaners if they are scams. When you say that Wealthy Affiliate is free it sounds too good to be true. Would I need to provide credit card information if I signed up for the free trial program?

    1. Hi, Lynn!

      Thanks for stopping by.

If a program claims to teach you how to make money online and costs a lot, it probably is a scam or at least over-priced. It really is possible to make money online without an investment, but as I mentioned, spending in the right places at the right time can accelerate your progress substantially. However, if it costs more than about $75 a month to build and maintain your online business, you’re paying too much.

The Wealthy Affiliate Starter Membership is totally free. It won’t cost you a dime and you don’t need a credit card. It truly is free.

People have made money with the free starter membership, but there is a paid option too. I encourage anyone who is interested in making money online with a legitimate business to begin with the free membership and, when they’re ready, upgrade to the paid membership.

      All the best,

      Gary

  9. Those survey scams are pretty shady. Even if all of them were 100% reliable it’s generally a pretty inefficient way of making money and you’re really just underselling yourself. The information you’re giving is really worth a lot more.

But yeah building an online business, finding a niche that you can talk about and beginning a website is by far the best way of starting up a a business with few risks. It takes time to see results, but it’s really up to the person to understand his niche inside and out and actually understand how to get people to click on links, which takes time and a bit of luck.

There’s a massive discrepancy between those who are successful online and those who are not. I think anyone can learn to make it online, but it really does feel that people who are better at understanding how to sell to people will do better.

    Great article, though

    1. Hi, Darren!

Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate your comment.

I agree, surveys are a waste of time and probably a risk. I’m convinced anyone can make a darn good living online with the right training. Unfortunately, there is a lot of scams out there.

Thanks for pointing out that it does take time to build a profitable online business, but that is true with any legitimate business whether online or off.

      All the best,

      Gary
